Feb.27th Beach Burn - good weather, a lot of fun. We had a sequence controlled ring of 10 cast lens LEDs in the sand and five test castings in different colors. The plastic resin lens castings gave good visibility 360 degrees around and 180 degrees across the top. From 600 feet away it was still visible. The best results were from the Super bright (7000 mcd) orange-red (620nM) type. "Stomp testing" was limited due to the softness of the sand and some faults in our subsurface mounting (plastic cups) The lens held up well to the presence of sand, even when some kids played "bury the lights", most of the sand slid off the lens and you could still see them.
March 28 beach Burn - It was windy, it was cold, we missed Crimson. There was a BIG bonfire, many fireworks, people whirling burning things, and a guy on fire (only his hat was permanently injured), the usual good time. We testing a different driver circuit and Lens mounting method. Although the pulse driver did not look quite as impressive on the beach as it did in the garage, the visibility was improved and the apparent brightness remains high at lower duty cycles. The expanded foam mounting needs a little more work, but the needed improvements are obvious from the test results.
April 10th, - The Burning Man TOWN MEETING - Food was served in the rain and no one seemed to mind, that's a burningman crowd for you. To the guy who was grilling steak with a butterfly knife and a plastic fork, (in the rain) hat's off, that takes real skill, thanks. We had the small display set up and flashing at people. We signed up two pages of helpers. Many people took cards but we didn't get your names. Now, all of you who just took cards should email here so we can get you on the mailing list.
April 24 beach Burn - It was windy, it was cold, but we're used to that. Note that if you use five gallons of gas to start a bonfire, the fire dept. will at least drive by and look... We put a stake in the ground and measured out 300 ft, there we placed a line of lights to get a feel for the scale of the real thing. Damn this is going to be big. The full circle will fill ocean beach from the retaining wall to the water. I had some concrete and some foam mounted lights. The concrete mounted pods could take all the stomping we throught at them. It looks like we'll use concrete.
